Join Tonia over 3 weekends as we dip our yoga toes into the world of Ashtanga. This system of Yoga is the basis and root from which many of the current modern dynamic yoga styles were developed (Vinyasa Yoga, Power Yoga and Flow yoga etc.) Ashtanga yoga is a traditional system comprised of 6 series. In this workshop we will be delving into the first of the series, the primary series also known as Yoga Chikitsa (yoga therapy).
We will reinforce the key elements of the Tristana method - correct breathing, posture and drishti (gazing points). There will be a focus on alignment and the vinyasa method, laying the framework for a safe and beneficial yoga practice for the long term. Over the course, we will learn the primary series sequence, the correct vinyasa in the series and transitioning between postures.
The key principles in our course are applicable to all dynamic yoga styles where breath is used to connect sequential movements. Suitable for vinyasa yoga students wanting to build increased focus and internal awareness, those interested to learn traditional Ashtanga yoga or looking to begin some home practice but are unsure where to start.
This course is open to anyone with a regular yoga practice (no beginners) and will be taught in a small group, the same students each week means personal attention and guidance.
Tonia began regular yoga practice in 2004 and has been teaching vinyasa and ashtanga yoga for more than a decade. She draws inspiration and teaches from her own experience, and places key emphasis on breath and essential alignment principles to prevent injuries.
Tonia has spent many years studying with senior Ashtanga teachers in India and worldwide. Since 2013 she has regularly travelled to Mysore to study with Sharath Jois at the Shri K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Institute, home of Ashtanga Yoga.
